Core principles of Service Learning
- Embedded in Curriculum: Service learning is not a standalone program but an integral part of our educational framework. It is embedded in the curriculum, ensuring that students engage in service activities as a natural expression of their learning.
- Authentic Engagement: Effective service learning involves understanding and addressing the real needs of the community. This authentic engagement helps students develop empathy and a deeper connection to those they serve.
- Long-term Relationships: Building sustained relationships with the community is crucial. Long-term engagement ensures that the service provided is meaningful and impactful.
- Reflection Loop: Reflection is a vital component of service learning. It allows students to think critically about their experiences, understand the impact of their service, and integrate their learning into their personal and academic growth.

- Connected to Christ: At the heart of our mission statement is the desire to equip students to live for Godās glory. Students are encouraged to see Service Learning as a response to Godās love for them shown in Christ, and therefore an outpouring of their love for the him and for others (Matthew 22:37-39).
- Opportunities for Every Student: Service Learning should be integrated into teaching and learning across stages and subjects. The benefit of this is that every student will engage in Service Learning across multiple touchpoints throughout their schooling.
- Itās Already Happening: There is so much exciting Service Learning already happening within our school from Prep to Year 12. āHandy Helpersā in Kindergarten, Salt and Lighting Team (SALT), Year 6 buddies, Music Tour, Home Class program, the Yarrabah trip, Year 10 Wellbeing Drive, School and House captains etc.
- Curriculum and beyond: While much of our service learning will be embedded in the curriculum, there are also opportunities for standalone activities for different types of students.
- Character Formation: Service Learning is intricately linked to our Graduate Profile. We recognise that habits of service and servant-hearted leadership are characteristics that we want to see developed in our students, and so we actively pursue opportunities to serve others in our community.
- Christās Ambassadors: As those already reconciled to Christ, we are compelled by his love to be part of this ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:14-21). Service Learning naturally aligns with this as we seek to make disciples in Jesusā name.
At Covenant, Service Learning is seen as a response to Godās love, encouraging students to serve others as an expression of their faith. With opportunities for every student across various stages and subjects, Service Learning is already making a significant impact, from Kindergarten to Year 12. This approach not only supports academic excellence but also contributes to character formation, aligning with our mission to equip students to live for Godās glory and be Christās ambassadors in the world.
